LAS VEGAS (March 21, 2024) - Pastoral leaders from around the Archdiocese gathered together on March 21 for the annual Chrism Day with talks by Fr. Mark R. Francis, CSV. After the talks, the faithful gathered with Archbishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D., Bishop Gregory W. Gordon, and concelebrating priests for the Chrism Mass. Both events were held at Our Lady of Las Vegas Catholic Church in Las Vegas.
The theme for the Chrism Day was "Culture, Liturgy, and Evangelization: An On-Going Pastoral Challenge". The two hour-long reflections were given by Fr. Mark R. Francis, CSV of the Clerics of St. Viator (Viatorians). The first reflection was on thinking about culture and the Church's Teaching on culture. The second reflection was on looking at the individual Parish and Moving toward interculturality.
Following the reflections, the faithful gathered to celebrate the Chrism Mass with Archbishop Thomas as the celebrant and Fr. Francis as the guest homilist. During the Chrism Mass, the Chrism Oil, Oil of Catechumens, and the Oil of the Sick are sacred oils used in various sacraments that are blessed and consecrated during the Chrism Mass. Following the Mass, the oils are distributed to the Parishes to be used throughout the next year.
