Las Vegas (Feb. 27, 2024) — On Sunday, February 25, 2024, Archbishop George Leo Thomas, Ph.D. presided over the Rite of Election. This year’s ceremony was attended by 344 catechumens from 22 of our parishes and missions who gathered with their sponsors and their families at the Shrine of the Most Holy Redeemer.
The Rite of Election is a significant ritual for those who will be received into the Catholic Church this Easter after journeying through the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA). During the Rite of Election, each parish presents its Book of the Elect to the Archbishop. This Rite includes calling by name those who are now elected by the Archbishop to be welcomed into the Catholic Church at Easter.
The Rite of Election brings the local Catholic community together to celebrate and witness the formal acceptance of catechumens – individuals who are not yet baptized – into the next stage of their initiation. The names of the Catechumens are written into the Book of the Elect during the Rite of Sending in their home parishes before the Rite of Election with the Archbishop. The Archbishop then signs the Book of the Elect and formally accepts those who are going to be welcomed into the Catholic Church.
The Rite of Election is organized by the Department of Faith Formation at the Archdiocese of Las Vegas in cooperation with those responsible for the RCIA process for both children and adults in each of our parishes.
